The bi-annual Bug Barometer™ from The National Pest Management Association predicted a very heavy pest season for spring/summer 2018.
According to the NPMA, the unusual winter weather patterns have created various pest problems.
Southern areas have experienced a colder and wetter winter thanks to the moisture, sleet, and snow brought by La Niña. The leftover moisture created an ideal condition for pest populations to boom as temperatures begin to rise.
The Northwest portion of the country had a much milder winter, indicating an increase in ant, tick, and cockroach populations.
Based on the Bug Barometer, ticks will flourish in all northern regions—the Northeast, New England, Midwest, North Central and North West regions will face a big battle with ticks this year.
Ticks are gruesome critters; they are famously known for carrying Lyme disease and Rocky Mountain spotted fever. Adult ticks have eight legs and look almost like spiders when they aren’t engorged with blood. Once they latch onto a person or animal and begin to draw blood, they can grow to between ¼ and ½ inch long, making ticks very noticeable when they are fully engorged.
It’s not easy to identify diseased ticks, the best way to protect yourself is to minimize the risk of being bitten by all ticks. Avoid tall grass and wooded areas, wear closed-toe shoes, and tuck your pants into socks or boots for extra skin protection. Insect repellent with DEET, picaridin, or IR3535 is recommended by the EPA and the CDC. After spending time outside, check your body and your pets carefully. Wearing light-colored clothing can also make ticks easier to detect.
If you’ve been bitten by a tick, seek medical attention if flu-like symptoms or a rash appear. If the tick has been removed, it’s wise to bring it in for testing by a state health department for any potential diseases.
Termites, roaches, and ants are the main concerns for residents in the warmer areas. Read our previous blog to learn more about these critters.
