As a pest management service, we hear bug myths all the time. Some seem crazy, and some of the wildest myths are even true. We wanted to share some of our favorite bug myths with you, and set the record straight on a few pest myths.
Myth: Scorpions will glow in a black light.
Fact: This myth is 100% true! These pests may already be frightening enough, but the outermost layer of a scorpion’s exoskeleton contains a protein that fluoresces and glows under an ultraviolet light!
Myth: You can tell the age of a lady bug by counting the number of spots on its wings.
Fact: The spots on a ladybug’s back are no indication of age. As ladybugs molt and grow wings their colors and spots may change. The number of spots is more indicative of their species than their age.
Myth: Earwigs crawl into sleeping people’s ears and eat their brains.
Fact: Earwigs live on leaves, flowers, fruits and fungi, not humans. They do not travel into people’s ears while they are sleeping.
Myth: A change in diet will attract or repel mosquitoes.
Fact: While some people believe that bananas will attract and garlic will repel mosquitoes, the truth is, a human’s diet will not affect these pests. Consider wearing a repellent containing Deet.
