April is designated National Pest Management Month to increase awareness about the work that pest industry professionals do to protect health, food, and property from the threat of pests. But what is the work that they do?

When you think of a pest control professional, you probably think of a technician who shows up at your house to inspect and treat for household pests. Some may even have a negative conception of a dirty job, think Vincent D’Onofrio as the exterminator in Men In Black. That’s not what it’s like at all!

At HomeTeam, we offer a great company culture and a variety of roles, with many opportunities for advancement. Even less commonly known are our other positions that aren’t just treating homes for pests – like those in customer service, sales, and installing our networked home pest control system, Taexx, in new construction homes. We interviewed three team members to bring you the inside scoop on what it’s like to work at HomeTeam.

Tony Hart, Taexx Installer in Riverview, Florida

Q. What does a normal day look like for you?

A. I install HomeTeam’s built-in pest control system, Taexx, into the walls of new homes that are being constructed. My day usually consists of about 3-5 assignments, where I visit houses in the framing stage, which means the home has a roof but no drywall. I really like this role because I have the ability to work on my own schedule; there is no micro-managing or stressful hustle.

Q. What has surprised you the most about working in pest control?

A. Honestly, how simple the job is. HomeTeam has great training programs for all positions, and they make sure you are ready to take on your role without rushing you. If you do your job right, you have nothing to worry about.

Q. What made you want to work for HomeTeam?

A. I think the main thing that struck my interest was the opportunity for career development and growth within HomeTeam that doesn’t require a college degree. Everywhere I went, I needed a degree to excel. At HomeTeam, I can advance and be recognized for my hard work. The best thing about HomeTeam is the camaraderie and the support all around; you are taken care of no matter what. Teamwork is huge, I haven’t met one person who works for this company who is not happy here.

Vicki Gilligan, Inside Sales Representative in Naples, Florida

Q. What does a normal day look like for you?

A. I connect with potential and current customers about the various pest control services we provide. I spend a lot of time on the phone, and it’s really interesting getting to talk to different people every day. I like to stay informed, and I’m constantly learning in my position. For instance, I’ve learned a lot about our area and the specific pest pressures that our technicians deal with in the field.

Q. Had you ever considered a career in pest control before?

A. Not really. I was in customer service before I came across HomeTeam. I decided to try it out, and my manager was great about allowing me a learning curve to get the hang of it. There is a lot of training available, as well as plenty of opportunities for advancement. If you like to talk with people, you will do well as a sales representative – it’s all about building good rapport with customers.

Q. What do you like about working for HomeTeam?

A. I have been with HomeTeam for 15 years. When you’re with a place for so long, it’s because you enjoy it. The whole attitude and culture make it a really nice place to work. HomeTeam is a good, stable company that is here for the long-term. The pay is fair, and they offer merit increases every year. They also offer great benefits, which is a huge incentive for me, especially since I am close to retirement.

Kenny Barrett, Outside Sales Representative in Dallas, Texas

Q. You recently advanced from the position of service technician to sales representative. How has this changed your normal day?

A. As a service technician, I would make my way through my route treating homes for pests and addressing customer requests. As a sales representative, I also get to manage my route, but I’m going to houses to connect with customers and give them more information about HomeTeam and our services. With both positions, it’s important to determine the customers’ needs and let them know what we can provide and what to expect. I really like the freedom; I’m not staring at a computer all day and I get a lot of customer interaction.

Q. How did you move from being a service technician to a sales rep?

A. HomeTeam encourages advancement in all positions and promotes from within. Once you’ve been at your office for a year, you can transfer all over the place location-wise or move up the ladder. For instance, the person I replaced as sales rep has moved up to the position of service manager.

Q. What do you like about working for HomeTeam?

A. They actually take care of you. My benefits package is outstanding, the hours are decent, and you are given the opportunity to excel. HomeTeam provides a lot of opportunity for growth, especially through internal education and training. I’ve recommended several people to work here.
