Spring Cleaning Tips to Prevent Pests

Birds chirping, flowers blooming, and bees buzzing indicate that spring is here! To many people, this invigorating season is a time to watch the world come back to life, and to dust away the winter blues, getting the house feeling fresh and clean

From a pest control standpoint, spring cleaning is a great opportunity to prevent bugs – if you know where to find them, and how to clean them out!

Ants

More than 80% of homeowners experience problems with ants, making ants the most common pest problem in America. Eliminating any food and water sources would be step one to prevent indoor ant problem yourself. You can also purchase a pest treatment product form your local retailer. However, if your ant problem persists, it’s best to contact a local pest control professional who can easily identify the type of ant, find their nest, and treat the source of the problem.

Spiders

Darker areas of the house like corners, basements, and attics are often the ideal places for spiders to hide and breed.Knocking down a spider web is not enough, preventing these critters from coming in should be the goal.

Spiders will have fewer places to hide if you minimize the clutter in your home; so keeping your home clean should be step one and here are a few examples: put away and seal the food, wipe down surfaces and vacuum the floors, use clean plastic containers instead of cardboard boxes for storage.

Spiders invade the house by entering cracks and gaps in doors and windows. So sealing any cracks or crevices would greatly lower the chance for spiders and other pests from coming in.

Cockroaches

Warmer temperatures and humid climates in the spring create the best living conditions for the roaches, they are typically found in areas where they can access water. During spring cleaning, check behind kitchen appliances such as refrigerator, stoves, and dishwashers for signs of a cockroach infestation.

They may also hide under mats, rugs, floor drains, and sinks. Cockroaches are nocturnal insects that prefer to crawl around dark nooks and crannies. If you see one scamper across your kitchen floor during daylight hours, you may have an infestation.

Spring cleaning is a good time to lessen the chance of an infestation in your home by eliminating above pests’ preferred environments:

  • Wipe down all kitchen surfaces. Any sticky or sugary residue remaining on your counter
  • Fix leaky water sources. Keep moisture at a minimum by promptly repairing leaking pipes or faucets
  • Pick up after yourself. Make sure all of your trash makes it into the garbage bag and is securely covered to eliminate food sources. Remove garbage bags from the kitchen often and keep trashcans clean
  • Avoid leaving out dinner scraps and unwashed dishes. Keep leftover food stored in tight, covered containers whether they are on the counter or in your refrigerator
  • Trim bushes and hedges that are near or touching your house
  • Caulk or close potential entry points
