It’s Rodent Season! Here’s How to Help Prevent Mice and Rats from Invading Your Home

You’re not the only one looking for refuge when temperatures drop. Rodents can look for shelter, food and water inside your home.

“Not only are rodents a nuisance, they can be a threat to your health and safety,” said Russ Horton, entomologist at HomeTeam Pest Defense. “They spread a number of diseases, and are known to chew on wires, which can put your home at risk of an electrical damage.”

The National Pest Management Association (NPMA) has designated November 15-21 as Rodent Awareness Week to educate homeowners about the threats of rodents. According to a national survey by HomeTeam, 60% of homeowners in the U.S. experience a problem with mice at some point, and up to 30% experience a problem each year. Mice are one of the top five pests of greatest concern in the country.

Like most pest problems, prevention is always easier than treatment, and that’s true where rodents are concerned. To help prevent rodents from snuggling up inside your home, follow these tips from our pest experts.

Secure the outside of your home.

  • Fill holes and gaps with steel wool and expanding foam, or block them with hardware cloth.
  • Seal cracks and crevices with caulk.
  • Install door sweeps, or weather stripping to prevent rodents from entering – don’t forget around your garage door.
  • Ensure your home’s vents have a screened backing, and close them when not in use.

Play keep away.

  • Pick up pet food bowls at night.
  • Place leftover food in sealed containers.
  • Eliminate sources of water, such as leaky pipes or clogged drains.

Don’t create hiding places.

  • Store firewood at least 20 feet away from your home.
  • Remove weeds and debris, and keep shrubbery and tree branches trimmed.
  • Store boxes and containers in your attic and basement, a few inches above the ground.

If you’re unsure if rodents are roaming your halls, here are a few key signs to look for:

  • Rodent droppings – these may be found near pet food, in cupboards, drawers, or in your attic or basement.
  • Nibbled Food Boxes or Containers – Rodents can chew through plastic bags
  • Stale and Pungent Smells – It’s common to smell an unusual pungent odor when rodents are present.

If you notice any of these signs, or suspect you have a rodent infestation, it’s best to call a pest professional. As always, HomeTeam is happy to help, and we are committed to providing exceptional service. Visit www.PestDefense.com or call (877) 461-7378 to schedule an appointment!
